Once in a great while, I come up with a million dollar idea for some other business or organization and this one was worthy of sharing with the world.
If you run a pet adoption, pet shelter, or work for a humane shelter, listen up - because this idea will save the lives of pets.
The first concept of marketing a website is called a “Call to Action“. A Call to Action funnels customers to a specific action, such as purchasing a product, signing up for a newsletter, or calling your organization. Many elements can play on the call to action on a website and the idea I have for you will increase this call to action 1000%.
We all know humane shelters house pets and if they are not adopted, the end result can be fatal for the orphaned pet. The million dollar idea I have is “truth” in marketing that provides a website with a countdown to the day they are being “put to sleep”. I know, it sounds wrong, but why not spread the word about the reality if the pet is not placed in a nice home, the results will be death?

Now we could get all Web 2.0 on it with RSS feeds, email subscriptions, AJAX Based Countdowns, the ability to sort shortest time left, and many more cool ideas.
If you are the webmaster for a shelter that house pets, the time is now to step up to the plate with this idea and save the lives of the pets you are serving. What I can guarantee you is a higher percentage of adoption.
I have no idea why I like to single people out. First it was “One Man” and when I heard our buddy Matt Cutts was a the fan of a feline, I couldn’t help remember the Bonsai Kitten Hoax a few years back. If you were not lucky enough to see it, the basis of the hoax was the ability to pre-package a kitten into a jar with feeding tubes for display in your house. It caused a slight stir on the Internet with people complaining about animal cruelty. My version of Bonsai Kitten, includes Matt Cutts - but I had to get a little more creative with this since their is only “one” Matt Cutts.
A couple of things will need to take place for this to happen.
Task 1, get in touch with Rick Moranis and cross my fingers that the shrinking device he created is real!
Task 2, talk to Matt Cutts and see what price he could be purchased for - and if he would be willing to be shrink himself to fit inside the jar, and more importantly if he would accept a feeding tube.
Task 3, sell him on Ebay to the highest bidder. I am thinking some Internet Marketing Firm wishing to do some viral marketing could use Matt Cutts inside a Jar for trade show booths and maybe even advice.
Yeah, Yeah. We could do the “Matt Cutts” action figure - but how boring would that be. I would prefer to have an original miniature Matt Cutts in a Jar.

Being an avid coffee drinker, I am hard at work producing the Kopi Luwak Poopra plugin to monitor and keep on the lookout for that “special” bean. My programmers and scientist have been engaged in the chemical breakdown of identifying additional coffee beans that could be used for the “ultimate” cup of coffee.
If you are not familiar with Kopi Luwak, here is what Wikipedia has to say about it….
Kopi Luwak (pronounced [ˈkopi ˈluwak]) or Civet coffee is coffee made from coffee berries which have been eaten by and passed through the digestive tract of the Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus). The civets eat the berries, but the beans inside pass through their system undigested. This process takes place on the islands of Sumatra, Java and Sulawesi in the Indonesian Archipelago, and in the Philippines (where the product is called Kape Alamid). Vietnam has a similar type of coffee, called weasel coffee, which are coffee berries which have been defecated by local weasels. In actuality the “weasel” is just the local version of the Asian Palm Civet.
Kopi Luwak is the most expensive coffee in the world, selling for between $120 and $600 USD per pound, and is sold mainly in Japan and the United States. It is increasingly becoming available elsewhere, though supplies are limited: only 1,000 pounds (450 kg) at most make it into the world market each year (Pg 23, The Gospel According to Starbucks; Sweet). One small cafe, the Heritage Tea Rooms, in the hills outside Townsville in Queensland, Australia has Kopi Luwak coffee on the menu at A$50.00 (=US$46.00) per cup, and approximately 4 people a week are up for it, which has gained nationwide Australian press.[1]. In April 2008, the brasserie of Peter Jones department store in London’s Sloane Square starting selling a blend of Kopi Luwak.
Instead of monetizing via traditional “AdWords” or by selling banner ads on Poopra, I will be harnessing the power of Poopra to locate coffee beans that have not been digested and sending out the special forces to collect these. While my special blend won’t be digested by the Asian Palm Civet , but rather humans, I will have a very special price tag associated with the coffee.
A word of warning to Starbucks. Should this become bigger than expected you can be sure to see “PooBucks” (A Poopra Compay) on every city block in the United States. I may also need some assistance from fellow readers, if by chance you eat coffee beans and visit airports, I need some test subjects to document your consumption and deposit of these coffee beans in various airport locations.

I am setting the funny hat aside for a few moment to deliver you an important message and some tips on gaining viability for your BLOG. You can write and write but without visitors you will simply be a ghost writer without subscribers and without a following. Not all bloggers are lucky enough to have someone like “One Mans Blog” to assist in promotion so you have to get down and dirty with traditional link building, self promotion, and gorilla marketing techniques.
I just submitted my site to www.dmoz.org and yes some of the SEO guru’s out there will tell you this isn’t worth it’s weight in gold, but let me tell you why I think it still holds value and some tips to really make your site stick.
DMOZ is more than just an old school directory, it is also a feed to 1,000’s of other directories. They have a system called RDF, that allows programmers, database gurus, and software vendors to import the entire directory for use in their own projects. See http://rdf.dmoz.org/. If you are lucky enough to get listed, it will get you listed in many more than 1 site. The real challenge is getting listed, but here are a few tips to help the process.
1.) Find the best category possible, if you have a topic related site, this is key, if not spend some time finding what you believe is the best category.
2.) When it comes time to submission, read the instructions very carefully and do as they say. If you break one of their golden rules you will never see your site listed.
3.) Submit once and wait a long time, past experience has shown 6, 12, 18 weeks is not an abnormal amount of time to get listed.
I just submitted AMB’s (Another Mans Blog) and if I get listed I will report back the exact timing it took.
That’s DMOZ in a nutshell, it probably deserved it’s own post, but I am including it with this one!
I have this list and let me tell you where I received it. I was working on another project to help promote a BLOG; and looking for some ways to build some quality links. In doing so, I spoke with a friend of friend that operates a link building service. He wanted $200-300 to manually submit the website to 100-200 quality websites. Instead of paying him ransom on this, I offered to purchase the list for $50.00. I purchased it and submitted the websites myself.
The sites vary and have changed a bit. Some are requiring payment or registration. I would not pay anyone to list your site, unless you are desperate and in such case give me $25.00 and I’ll be your friend.
